Coffee Talk: "Encouraging Meaningful Conversation with Children About Their School Experiences"

It can sometimes be challenging to talk with your children about their day at school. With little context, making sense of what they are relating is often difficult. Is the information accurate or exaggerated, misremembered, aspirational, or simply seen through a child's lens? How do you open and sustain such conversations? How do you react and relate to their thoughts about their interactions with teachers and peers? How do you help acknowledge and celebrate their joyful experiences? How do you help provide perspective, reassurance, encouragement, and strategies when they feel something did not go well that day? We'll explore some of the typical ways children narrate past events, the emotive landscape of their classroom social world, and suggest ideas for understanding, interpreting, and connecting around their school experiences.
